Season’s Greetings from all at ESCC

The season’s activities ended with the Annual Dinner and Presentation Evening, held this year at the Stowmarket Golf Club. A well-attended occasion saw the regular, hard-earned playing awards handed out. The players’ players of the season were Scott Gregory for the 1st XI and Taylor Thorpe for the Sunday side. The presentations concluded with a special award to Simon Edgar who has made an outstanding contribution to the club over the twenty-five seasons the club has completed since it re-formed in 1988. Thanks again, Simon. The Annual General Meeting was held in November. The officers and captains for 2015 were elected with Charlie Tunstall back as captain of the 1st…

    Chairman’s end of season message

Another season has ended with both our sides achieving respectable league positions. The Saturday side never quite lived up to their flying start but, nonetheless, had some impressive victories. There were some good individual contributions but the wins often came from real team efforts with everyone contributing. The Sunday XI was safe before the last weekend of the season and several batsmen made good contributions during the last few weeks. The bowlers stuck to their task manfully and kept going even when wickets were hard to come by. Thanks to the captains of both sides for all their hard work again this year. Thanks also to Simon for all his…

    Catches win matches

Earl Stonham’s Sunday side travelled to Boxford and beat Edwardstone in a low scoring game where they succeeded in taking all six catches that came their way. Some economic bowling from Edwardstone made it difficult for Stonham’s batsmen to score quickly. Edmund Player and Simon Edgar top-scored for Stonham. Edwardstone started well and the game looked as though it was slipping away until Stephen Lewis took a difficult caught and bowled opportunity, which triggered some hope of revival. Another Edwardstone batsman was tempted by a “loopy Lewis special”, but failed to judge the flight of the ball properly, hitting it straight back to Lewis for a second caught and bowled.…

    Chairman’s message

The final games of the season approach and the Saturday XI have secured their Division 5 place again for 2015 with a 50 run win against Harwich and Dovercourt. That win broke a run of defeats and we hope that the team will finish with another victory on Saturday against Bury III. The Sunday side lost narrowly to Battisford despite 50s from Scott Eade and Sam Fenning. Chasing 192 the innings took time to gain momentum and left the lower order with too much to do. There are two Sunday games left and at least one win is required to maintain the Division 4 spot. The annual Gary Small Memorial…

    Two losses and new photographs

Both teams lost at the weekend. The first team struggled with only 10 players. After a promising start, the second team crashed to 99 all out. However, both sides still fought hard and are looking forward to the weekend’s action. Photos from the Saturday side’s last home game against Stowmarket are available. 2nd XI beat East Bergholt Academy

On Sunday, the ESCC 2nd XI managed to chase a decent 206 scored by the away side, East Bergholt academy. Stonham fielded well but couldn’t manage to bowl East Bergholt all out. Five wickets fell in total. Taylor Thorpe took two wickets, and the others went to Paul Storer, Stephen Lewis (caught and bowled), and Stuart Macrow, who carried on his good form from the previous weekend where he made his maiden half-century for ESCC. Despite the high score, Stonham started brilliantly with Stephen Lewis and Luke Edgar both scoring fifties before being dismissed, posting one of Stonham’s best ever first wicket partnerships (Stephen, renound for his solid and steady…

ESCC’s old guard keep the promotion hunt alive

The ESCC 1st XI beat Nacton in a tense and exciting match. Man-of-the-match, Scott Hornsby, scored an unbeaten 58, took three wickets and took one catch, helping Stonham to victory. After a shaky start with the bat, Jonny Hails (captain) started the recovery with an almighty whack straight back over the bowler’s head for four. Simon Edgar then steadied the ship and formed an excellent parternship with Hornsby to help Stonham score a respectable total of 192. After a another shaky start, this time with the ball, Colin Macrow and Hornsby steadied the ship again and Nacton ended up about 20 runs behind in the run chase. Charlie Tunstall also…

    First team back on track

A wonderful batting performance from the top order saw the Saturday side beat Bury St Edmunds III by 64 runs. Tom Wray, Trevor Scarlett and Colin Macrow all scored big half-centuries. Scott Gregory helped secure victory taking 6 wickets for 59 runs from 14.3 overs, including 4 maidens. Unfortunately the Sunday side only managed to score 134 at home to Elmswell. Despite Taylor Thorpe dispatching the opposition’s number one batsmen for a diamond duck, Elmswell comfortably reached the small target and play closed just before 6pm.
