2nd XI beat East Bergholt Academy
On Sunday, the ESCC 2nd XI managed to chase a decent 206 scored by the away side, East Bergholt academy. Stonham fielded well but couldn’t manage to bowl East Bergholt all out. Five wickets fell in total.
Taylor Thorpe took two wickets, and the others went to Paul Storer, Stephen Lewis (caught and bowled), and Stuart Macrow, who carried on his good form from the previous weekend where he made his maiden half-century for ESCC.
Despite the high score, Stonham started brilliantly with Stephen Lewis and Luke Edgar both scoring fifties before being dismissed, posting one of Stonham’s best ever first wicket partnerships (Stephen, renound for his solid and steady run-scoring, managed to get to fifty before Luke!). Then Colin Macrow and Edmund Player formed a second partnership, which made the site of victory much less nerve-racking towards the final few overs. The partnership was ended when Macrow was caught. This led to a short flourish and quick running between the wicket from David Eade to help things tick along nicely, before Simon Edgar hit a nice shot through the covers for four runs, securing the win.
The 1st XI lost to Stowmarket on Saturday in a tough game, where luck wasn’t on their side.
Some excellent teas were eaten over the weekend, which included home made cakes (scones with jam, fresh cream and strawberries on top, lemon drizzle cake), lovely ripe and juicy home-grown tomatoes, and the usual wide range of sandwiches.
Many thanks go to Mrs Abbott, Luke Abbott, Mr and Mrs Edgar, and Luke Edgar for making and organising the wonderful spreads.
