    Cricket gradually up-and-running

Since the Coronavirus worldwide pandemic, most competitive sport, including cricket, has had to pause for a while. Despite the 2020 cricket season being delayed, members of Earl Stonham CC have been keeping in touch via various social communication channels, taking part in quizzes, playing virtual cricket online against other local teams, and keeping the ground trim and proper. This Friday, club members are planning to take part in the first net session of the season, following Government safety guidelines. Below is an official message from Club Captain, Luke Edgar: —————————8<————————— Following the Government’s announcement and allowance from the ECB we can begin Net Practice on Friday evenings. The sessions will…

    Trevor’s final chairman’s report

Happy New Year from Earl Stonham Cricket Club! Below is Trevor Spall’s final message as club chairman: —————————8<————————— I think that it is fair to say that the 2019 season has been something of a mixed bag. Other people will comment further about the playing season just past. The strength of any club is in the commitment of many people. A club is the sum of its members. We have been well-served by many over the years and I am glad to say that this remains the case. I would like to thank the captains for all the time, effort and commitment they have given again this season. I know…

    End of season captains’ reports

1st XI 2019 was a disappointing year for the 1st XI, with only 3 wins achieved en route to finishing bottom of Division 5. The side’s bowling proved itself to be the bright spot of the season. The attack was admirably led throughout the season by the ever-improving Ant Stowe and Martin Stevens, and the additions during the season of Taylor Thorpe and Ollie Foster offered variety, youth and pace. Unfortunately, the batting lineup struggled throughout the campaign. With inconsistent availability and seemingly constant poor form, runs were often hard to come by. As well as making games more difficult to win, low-scoring losses only achieve the lowest of point…

    President’s Game

On Sunday August 25th the annual President’s Game, dedicated to the memory of Gary Small, was played at Earl Stonham Cricket Club. The weather was glorious, in stark contrast to last year’s wet event, and two sides played a good-humoured ‘Double 15-over’ game which was enjoyed more by some than others. The latter group includes some whose playing days are mostly behind them but who played their part willingly in the afternoon’s entertainment. This event is sponsored by the Porch family who were represented at different times of the day by Jane, Sharon, David and Daniella, and on the field by Ollie, though, sadly, our President, Tony, was unable to…

    Steve Stowe half century

Last weekend Steve Stowe (right) scored his maiden half century for Stonham, ending up unbeaten on 62 not out against Hadleigh II. Stonham’s top four batsmen each scored over 30 runs helping Stonham total 228 for just four wickets. Hadleigh fought hard with the bat, but were always slightly behind the run rate. Part of the reason for this was because Stonham kept taking wickets. Another great performance and rare feat was achieved by Luke Edgar, who managed to rack-up five catches – perhaps a Stonham record for a non-wicket keeper? The season is now in full flow with lots of cricket to play in ideal weather conditions. The 1st…

    Captain’s early season report

Earl Stonham’s Saturday XI have registered their first win of the season, beating Ipswich 2s by 14 runs at Clay Hall. Full scorecard. Ipswich’s decision to bowl looked sound when Martin Stevens was caught behind in the third over for no score, and a tight opening spell from J Howe and skipper I Knight left Stonham at 12-1 from 10 overs. With a minimum target of 200 being sought the batsmen fought back, reaching 60-1 at drinks (22 overs) and then 91-2 when Colin Macrow was narrowly run out by a direct hit for 32 in the 28th over. Scott Eade then joined Stephen Lewis at the crease, and the…

1st XI Captain’s end of season report

Earl Stonham’s 1st XI finished the season strongly, securing two victories in the closing two weeks of the year – successfully and confidently chasing 164 (for the loss of two wickets) at St Osyth and 206 (for the loss of three wickets) at Needham Market. These two results saw Stonham finish in 8th place of Division Five of the Two Counties – a commendable result for everyone involved in the team this season. My personal thanks go to all of the players who made themselves available this season. Across the twenty games only twenty players were needed, with eleven players playing over half the games. Having a strong core of…
