Catches win matches

Earl Stonham’s Sunday side travelled to Boxford and beat Edwardstone in a low scoring game where they succeeded in taking all six catches that came their way. Some economic bowling from Edwardstone made it difficult for Stonham’s batsmen to score quickly. Edmund Player and Simon Edgar top-scored for Stonham. Edwardstone started well and the game looked as though it was slipping away until Stephen Lewis took a difficult caught and bowled opportunity, which triggered some hope of revival.

Another Edwardstone batsman was tempted by a “loopy Lewis special”, but failed to judge the flight of the ball properly, hitting it straight back to Lewis for a second caught and bowled. Taylor Thorpe then took an excellent catch at mid-on off Sean High’s bowling. Lewis and Sean High continued to bowl a good line and length, slowing down the strike rate. Then it came down to opening bowlers Taylor Thorpe and Paul Storer to work their way through the tail-end, until High tore through a brave last wicket stand. The final game of the season is at home to Bury St Edmunds III on Sunday 14th September.

The Saturday side lost to Bury St Edmunds II. The fielding wasn’t quite as consistently good as the Sunday side’s, but the main reason for losing was because nobody quite managed to settle on a slightly foggy and dewy September day.

Unfortunately after an excellent start to the season, the 1st XI couldn’t manage promotion back to divison four, but did manage to easily secure their division 5 status for next season, finishing just below mid-table.
